Household Hazardous Waste Program Formally Commences

In order to protect our natural environment from harmful materials, regulations for the collection of refuse have been significantly tightened in recent decades. While these actions are vital from a public health perspective, they also make the disposal of certain common household goods difficult. Although several area nonprofit organizations work admirably to fill this service gap by offering periodic hard-to-recycle collection events, Brentwood recognizes that requiring residents to gather unwanted goods in a basement or garage and then to haul these items to an outlying municipality poses an inconvenience. The Borough additionally acknowledges that a lack of a local disposal option unfortunately encourages some individuals to discard these materials illegally. Beginning August 1st, a curbside solution is arriving in our community. Brentwood has contracted with Waste Management to offer a household hazardous waste collection program to residential customers. This initiative allows for the no cost disposal of automotive products, household chemicals, lawn & garden chemicals, pool chemicals, paint products, and electronics. Note that residents remain prohibited from placing these items at the curb on their regular refuse collection day. Rather, customers will contact Waste Management directly at 800-449-7587 or via www.wmatyourdoor.com to schedule an appointment. For more information, please view the attached flyer
